Answers to Bastille Day quiz

If you missed the quiz, you can see the questions here.

1. Marie-Joseph Paul Yves Roch Gilbert du Motier, Marquis de La Fayette

2. All of them

3.  1st Estate - clergy; 2nd Estate - royalty and nobility; 3rd estate - variously workers/laborers/ peasants (pretty much a catch-all for those who didn't fit into the first two groups)

4.  'b. debt and taxation'; like the American revolution, the beginning of the French revolution was also about taxation with representation and a revolt against taxation WITHOUT representation.  Originally, the third estate wanted to be included in decisions about taxation; after the formation of the National Assembly, they wanted all taxation to be with their approval.  It is significant that their first action was to give that approval to all existing taxation up to that point.

5.  'b. capitalism'; contrary to what some people believe about the French, the French revolution was completely and emphatically PRO-capitalism.

6. 'b. liberte, egalite, fraternite - liberty, equality, brotherhood

7.  a. the Enlightenment, the pro-scientific method / pro-logic and critical thinking movement of philosophy that was fundamental to the education of the U.S. founding fathers.
